Candlelight Science started as a group of teachers that needed text to support their inquiry science program. Without the funding to buy commercially produced readers, writing our own became the only viable option. After several years of working late into the night (hence the name, Candlelight Science) we now have a very large selection of text as well as other resources for the teaching of science.
Thus far, we have readers to support almost every Florida science standard for grades K-8. Everything we write is carefully check for readability to make sure it meets the needs of students. Another requirement for every piece of text we write is to slamdunk the standard and not just give it lipservice. During this process we are always mindful to focus on children's known misconceptions that are commonly associated with these topics. As you might have figured out, we have trouble sitting still. With a fairly large selection of text, we are also turning some attention to lesson plans and assessments.
We find often available lesson plans do not hit standards or they are not of complexity to help students build the necessary understandings to be successful on State mandated assessments. It is for this reason we have turned some attention to creating new lesson plans that are rigorous yet easiest enough for a teacher to faciliate.
In terms of assessment, we now working to develop practice questions as put the final touches on a complete set of summative assessments. There seems to be no rest for the weary.
It is our pleasure to share with fellow teachers. I hope you can find them useful in your classrooms. Please feel free to drop us a line from time to time and tell us how you are using our materials or even ways we can improve. If there is something you need, let us know. There is a good chance we have something sitting on the shelf and haven't had a chance to add it into the website.
From us to you, thank You for everything you do in your classrooms that help students develop a love for science.
